In recent years, people tend to claim more about human rights that can give them the freedom to do what they want. I used to think that what kinds of things have the power to ensure people's rights. I got two answers.
The first one is law. Without doubt, law makes it clear for people what rights they exactly have, in which way disputes on a certain issue can be greatly avoided. Of course, the premise is that the law is made based on the will of ordinary people. On the other hand, when someone violates the human rights, law gives the criteria of how the person should be punished. In this way, law is considered as an effective way to guarantee the basic fairness about human rights.
The second one, which I think is also the more important one, is people's social conscience, or morality. Without studying law, sometimes people already know what is right or wrong. The essential reason is our social conscience. This character enables us the ability to behave properly and try not to violate others' rights in a very natural way. Another effect of the social conscience is that it provides people with the ability of self-control when people want to commit some crimes under extreme emotions.
Nowadays, with the society developing quickly, people's ideological level has improved, as well as the sicial system if law. It means that our rights have been better protected in modern times.
I like you idea that law should be made based on the will of ordinary people. In fact, in some area, the government cannot assure people's due rights.I think that is a thing that we should fight for.
