Freedom of speech!!!

Unlike the old days, people think highly of human rights nowadays. We humans have equal rights simply because we are all humans. We have rights to speech freely, to move freely and to choose our religions freely. Among these various rights, the most important one I think is the freedom of speech.
On the one hand, as for me, talking is the best way to show my ideas and feelings. If people have freedom of speech, I can show my personal thoughts better and I can also understand others’ opinions better. In contrast, if people’s freedom of speech is limited, which means we cannot talk and discuss some political things or other sensitive issues, it will be hard for people to change their attitudes and opinions. As a result, the government of this country or area cannot realize their mistakes and the whole country’s development will be influenced. As we can see, the freedom of speech is very important for people and the whole country.
On the other hand, there are some problems coming with free speech. Some impulsive words that are published in newspaper or on the Internet can do great harms to a large number of people, especially in mixed racial countries. To solve this problem, I think we need high level of education, which can lead people have their unique and appropriate valuation and judgement. Once people have a sense of what they should do and what they should not do, they will do the right things without being forced.
In summary, in my opinion, the freedom of speech is the most important one among human rights. In addition, we should let people be well educated to avoid the side effects of the freedom of speech.

  1. I agree with you; to speak freely gives us the opportunities to exchange our real ideas with other people. Also, being educated is important, too. I think that it is a reason that we come to NUS for further education. By the way, you can always speak freely in our Group 4~HaHa~

  2. Yes, the freedom of speech is important and necessary. But in my opinion, it is more important to think carefully what should say and what should not say before we give our opinion. Once we are given the right to speak freely, we should respect and appreciate this right.

  4. I agree with you. The overuse of freedom will hurt others. We own the right and we need to use it properly.

  5. Yes,we have the rights to talk freely, but it is to some degree, not totally freely.Such as your oral report, you can talk what you want, but in a limited area-a certain topic. You have the rights, but there still are rules and laws.

  6. You have given a balanced perspective on human rights and the freedom of speech. There is no such thing as a total or complete freedom of speech. However, without boundaries, such freedom of speech can be subjected to abuse. This is by far you best blog entry. Keep it up, Pan Long!
