Privacy on the Internet

Many people consider privacy as one of fundamental human rights. As computer and the Internet have become more and more popular in recently years, people can get great amount of information faster and more conveniently, but on the other hand, people may lose privacy easily. The fact is that privacy has become one of the biggest problems in the new electronic age because people use the Internet more frequently. And there are several reasons that cause this issue.

The first reason is that many people regard the Internet as a place where can store records of everything permanently--every online photo, status update, Twitter post and blog can be stored forever. As social network sites have become very popular within last five years, it brings some problems to privacy. With the creation of Facebook and the continued popularity of Myspace, many people are giving their personal information out on the Internet. The third reason is about the privacy agreement of social network sites. It states that social network owns all of the content of what users upload. That means all pictures, videos and messages are stored in the social network datebase. Even if the user decides to terminate his or her account, the information will not disappear if the datebase is still there.

If one's personal information is disclosed to others, it may be, to some degree, dangerous because others can use those information to swindle money and there are potential privacy threats. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to protect one's personal information. The easiest way is not giving out personal information, such as name, address, telephone number and social insurance number. But there do have times that we need to fill in some forms online about our personal information, so make sure those online forms are secure. And it will be better to question why people want our personal information and make it clear that we do not want our information to be known by the third party. Another method is finding and reading the privacy policies of the Web sites before using them and never do business with any sites that doesn't have a clearly stated privacy policy.

I hope everyone can be aware of the problem of privacy and protect your privacy well.
