Feminism

At first, I would like to share a story about a great female –Hypatia. She is the daughter of Theon, who is the last researcher in Museum of Alexandria. Maybe due to she got a good education from her father and her talent, she become a great mathematician, philosophy, astronomer and tutor. At that time, however, the conflict between Christianity and other religions were very serious in Alexandria; and unfortunately she was drawn in this dispute. She was very popular with people even including some Christians, but she was envied by some Christians as well; then the rumor spread that she was an evil, who usually talked to her friend Orestes to break up the friendship between Bishop Cyril and Orestes. One day, she was attacked and dragged to Caesarion Church by a crew of people. They tore off her clothes and used shells to scrape her flesh off her body till she died. Then they brought her body to Cinaron (a place) and burnt it. How cruel and non-humanity they were! I sympathize with Hypatia and hate that rude stupid people.
As I sighed for Hypatia, I wondered why she died. She was one of a few female who were knowledgeable at that time; if people respected female, would this tragedy still happen? Why knowledgeable women be envied and killed cruelly then? The answer is women were not treated equally as men and they did not own many rights they should have. Although women gained more rights than before now, there is still many discriminations or differences. For example, women get lower salary when they have the same job as wen. So feminism is not achieved totally, there are still a lot of work should be done.
Finally, I would like to use one sentence in Faust as the ending, which is “ The Eternally Female Draws Us Onward.”

  1. The gender discrimination is a big problem.
After all, people has this discrimination for a long time, so it is not easy to remove it, but I think the situation will be better.

  3. In the past, some tragedies about women did happen. Women were not repected, and they couldn't be treated equally as men. Women's rights were violated. Even though some of them were truly execellent, some discriminations about them still existed. This is a history tragedy. Fortunately, in today's society, women's positions are become more and more important. I hope one day women would be treated equally as men all over the world!

  5. I also read about the story in READER when I was in China. Iadmired her because she was brave to insist her work as a woman. I agree with you that there is still a long way to go. Women need to be as brave as her rather than just crying for rights.

  6. woo~~good example for arguing the rights of women. Your structure is also excellent! As a contrast, women rights today have been much improved. But it's still your duty to argue for more fairness in modern times!
