Today, we had a learning strategies class. Everyone has his own ways to develop his English skills. As far as I’m concerned, the best way to learn English breezily is watching English TV shows and taking notes when you meet some new words or new usage of old words. Not only can we enjoy the exciting plot ,but also we are able to know how to use English correctly in various situations.
However, the disadvantage is that sometimes we will be devoted in the story and put the note away. For dealing with this problem, I recommend watching the short TV shows, like Friends, a situation comedy, which is about 20 minutes one episode. It is about 6 persons’ life in New York, so it includes much communication in our daily life. Through this shows, we can learn a lot of useful words and when to use them. Besides, it won’t be boring, even you watch it again and again. So you can enjoy the plot at the first time, take your notes at the second time, and practice your listening and speaking without the lines at your third time.
Of course, it is not suitable for everyone. I hope you can find the most appropriate strategy for yourself.
Hi,Simon.I really like TV shows, too,so I think this learning strategy which you put forward in your blog is very useful. As far as I am concerned, each person's way of studying may be different,so we ought to find the way that is most suitable for us.At last,I sincerely hope that you can enjoy your learning strategy during the bridging course~
ReplyDeleteActually, I have seen an article written by a English learner telling her experience of learning English. Her strategy is quite similar to yours. First time for enjoying the plot, second time for listening and just replay it again and again. At last, she can even recite the dialogue without look at the captain. I suppose that will be a way suitable for most of us.
ReplyDeleteWOW, it seems really a good way.
DeleteHello simon. You have already talked about the advantages and disadvantages about TV shows.Unfortunately,I am the person who watches the TV shows without taking notes.Maybe I should change my methods next time when I watch TV shows!

DeleteThe last sentence is really the point I need! TV shows are good materials but sometimes we do not have ability to concentrate on the plot and remember the useful dialogues at the same time. So we need steps and achieve them one by one so that we can be methodical learners
ReplyDeleteWatching sitcoms like 'Friends' is one way of picking up a language. The experience is also more enjoyable because you are engaged through the visual as well as the audio elements through the television programme. Yes, you just need to have self-discipline when watching such shows as they can be addictive and you end up wanting to continue watching as many episodes as possible.
ReplyDeleteI cannot agree with you more! I always do that and it really helps me a lot. By the way, I recommend you the BIG BANG THEORY, a really fun American TV show.
