Learning strategies

I think it is a big topic to talk about learning strategies, because there are many things we can learn, such as languages, skills and knowledge. So what I will mention here is only learning strategies on English.

As for English, I have learnt for about 11 years, so I have some experience no matter how my English level is.

I don’t think people can remember English words by repeating it again and again. I have no idea whether there is a best way to recite English words or not, but I can learn the words by heart by reading the textbooks when I was a junior student. As time went by, I was admitted by senior high school, and my English told us her method about enriching vocabulary, which is reviewing the words in a certain time. She said, “I must memorise lots of words when I was in university, so I looked at every words intently. And I read them every day before I went to bed, then I had impression of them, so I knew its meaning when I saw one of my memorised words. Besides, I reviewed the words in a certain time, maybe once a month or longer. I didn’t try to recite them as soon as possible, because I would forget them if I didn’t use them for a long time. So using the words is important as well.” I agree with my teacher very much.

How about grammar? Watching grammar books or doing lots of exercises? No! It’s boring. I haven’t recited the grammar what eacher asked to, but I obeyed teacher’s words to recite texts in the morning reading. Now that you must read something, why not reciting the texts? And I got high marks in exams because I had intuition to judge. Of course that was I have done during the junior school days, there wasn’t much time for us to do that and the passages were too long when we were in higher grades. So maybe you can suggest your younger sisters and brothers to learn grammar like this.

When your English basic is steady, you should improve it and learn more about proverbs, culture for further communication. A friend of mine once said to me, “Recently I was reading the Bible in English, on which I usually conversed with foreigners. As you know, I have seen more than 100 Hollywood films, so there is no difficult to me. I like the feeling when I talking with people who I want to on my interested topic.” So I think it is a wonderful idea to watch movies for improving English skills.

These are my experience about English learning strategies, you can adapt what you consider is useful and learn from them. I will be thankful if you can share your strategies with me.

  2. Knowing the meaning of a word is not enough, Wei Dian, because knowing how to use the word idiomatically is more important. You might want to try to learn words in their contexts so that you will speak and write in idiomatic expressions. This will help you to enlarge your vocabulary and to improve your productive skills; it will also help others understand you better.

    1. Thank you fou your comment. When I was in grade one in senior high school,I memorized words like what you said. In bridging course, however, we should recite more words. How about I learn how to use them after I have recited the words?

    2. I agree with Dr Zhu! What is more, I think the most efficient way to learn grammar is to do questions. I believe we have not so exact intuition as we are not native speakers.

    3. Maybe what you want to express is "to do exercise,"but not "to do questions." Am I right?

  3. Maybe you can remember words by their pronunciations; it is easier for me to pick up pronunciations of English words. I think you can have a try.

  5. Your teacher is right. Reviewing the words in a certain time, or you will forget the meanings although the words look like familiar to you. Every morning after you get up or every night before you go to bed, just take a look at the new words, which is very helpful for memorising.
