English Learning Strategies

To learning a language, everyone may has his own strategies that may be suitable for himself. Because every person is an individual with his own personality. So, I want to talk about my own English learning strategies.
First, reading. Starting learning from reading is a good way. Not only can I check my vocabulary and comprehension ,but also I can improve my reading speed and skill. Second,  listening and watching. That means listening to English music and watching English movies. When I am watching a English movies, I can always find some interesting sayings which are common in American or British social lives but are seldom used during English class. Third, speaking. As we are in Singapore where there being a pretty good environment of English speaking, we have lots of chance, such as shopping, taking a bus, visiting a park, asking directions,etc. Just speak out and try my best to make others understood. The forth one, writing. Don't lose any chance to write English essays especially when there are others can make comments on that essay.
Above all, learning English or some other languages will not be difficult if one can find the suitable way and never give up.

  1. Yes, when we talk about learning strategies, we can't avoid to realize the four super stars-listening, speaking, reading, writing. We can practice these skills in our daily life. As shiyu said, we can speak in the public place, listening from TV, reading the newspaper, writing everyday. If we can add studing to our daily life, we will acquire more knowledges, not only English.

    1. I especially liked your last sentence, Simon; exposure to more information (in additional languages) can give us a wonderful opportunity to enrich our lives and deepen our understanding of the world.

On the other hand, I hope you and your classmates will eventually stop thinking of using and practicing English in your daily life (outside of class) as "studying;" Don't worry, I won't jump out of the trees and test you! XD

  2. When I finish reading this passage,I just want to say that although most of us know the basic tips about learning a language, only a few can follow them with patience and make big progress.I totally agree with what Shiyu has said, because sometimes the tips we all know can be the most classical and useful ones.

    1. But sometimes even we konw the strategies clearly, it is not a easy task for us to learn English well. But I think as we are in Singapore now, we all can find our own way to get used to the English language environment here.

  3. Great points, Summer! As you wrote, the "best way" of learning can be different from individual to individual, but I think your suggestions can be useful to everyone! ^_^ One thing I noticed; you provided examples of all of your points except the first one--what kinds of things would you like to read in English? I hope we can all share recommendations for interesting books, magazines, blogs, etc.!

As for my English comments, I'll share with you when we next meet in class, but let me give you and your classmates one quick point for now--be sure to change your font to a proper English font (not just Roman letters in Chinese font); that will fix the problem of words "breaking" at the end of each line, and will be easier for your "audience" to read! That's it for now--good job! ^_^

    1. Oh, I will change the font next time, and thank you for your advice! I have read some English stories on Reader's Digest, and I plan to read Harry Potter as you told us it is not so hard for us.

  4. I think the most useful comment is Joshua's-about the font……I am looking forward to a blog that don't require artificial combinations of words at the ending of each line
I benefit from your blog. You remind me of what I lack the most recently. That is reading. I will try to read more from now on!!!

  5. Yes, we live in an environment of English speaking, so we'd better catch the chance of talking with people in English. I think watching movies is useful, too. Movies can hold all of our attention, and we can learn some daily words and phrases from the characters.

  6. I like the second one and the third one most! I also believe watching English movies is a good way to learn spoken English, but reading and writing are always not so easy to me... I will try to read and write more so I can learn English better:)
