English Learning Strategies

English, as our second language, is not easy to learn. If we want to lean it efficiently, we need to adopt some strategies.
First, activate your ears. Listening is very important in learning a foreign language. I think watching movies and TV shows is a very useful method. Sometimes listening to a radio like BBC can be a little boring. While watching movies and TV shows can not only attract our attention but also teach us some common uses of daily English. However, we should pay attention to the choice of movies. Not all the movies are suitable. Because the lines in some movies are so casual that they don’t follow the rules of grammar. We’d better select the classic movies. Besides, don’t just choose the American movies or TV drama. We should watch them form different English speaking countries so that we can enrich ourselves with more vocabularies and phrases. The more we practice listening, the more clearly we’ll listen to the native speakers.
Second, open your mouth. Some people are afraid to speak a foreign language in front of a lot of people just like me. But I think practice makes perfect. Speaking more with others can increase your confidence. Although sometimes we can not express ourselves by using the exact words, sometimes we just can’t think of the words we’ve already known, but the situation will get better if we keep on talking with others in English.
In addition, never stop reading. Reading English books or newspaper can be a good way of learning lots of new words. It can also deliver to you fresh information and different views. Absorb them and then you’ll have something helpful in your mind.
Last but not least, make every effort , stick to your strategies and never give up!

  3. You're right, Tianqi. Strategies are very important for learning English. You might want to find out what strategies work for you and then make full use of that strategy. You might also want to try to use as many sense organs as possible when you are learning English, e.g. listening to whatever comes to your ears and reading whatever comes to your eyes when you are travelling around. This will help you develop your vocabulary.

    1. Thanks for your advice! Usually, I would like to listen to the conversation of people ih the MRT or at the canteen. Although it's a little impolite, I think it's helpful. I also like to read the slogan of advertisement around us. As you said, using the sense organs is important.

  5. I agree that "the lines in some movies are so casual that they don’t follow the rules of grammar". I find sometimes, the words in Gossip Girl are casual and not express. So, can you share some classic movies?
