We all Chinese students find it difficult for us to learn English in China not in terms of reading but the ability to apply it into our daily lives.So I think English programs can help a lot in this field.
Your everyday English will be improved a lot by watching TV shows.Because TV shows always include the records of the common life ,no wonder that it employs a large number of oral words and sentence styles.When you are watching the TV shows,you can know how native people express themselves in a certain situation,and remember the way people express themselves.So maybe after a period of time you will find yourself can speak idiomatic English.
You can obtain much knowledge about the culture behind English. Every language is based on a certain culture,and only when you understand the culture behind can you develop your ability in this kind of language.In English programs,there are considerable references to the culture.This will help to expand your horizons of the English culture and give you an insight of the story behind English so that you can have a better grasp of English.
When you are watching or listening to the English programs you create an English environment for yourself where you are exposed to English as much as you are abroad.It is just this kind of contact that can help you a lot in your learning process.Just go for it,and gradually you will find yourself fall in love with these programs.
Throughout your blog, there are many idiomatic phrases I really appreciate such as "expand your horizons of XXX", "have a better grasp of English", "be exposed to English" etc. It is your advantage to express your opinion using these kind of "native language". But it would be better to make few changes such as "We all Chinese students find it difficult for us to learn English" into a more fluent one (leave out "for us") etc.

ReplyDeleteI agree, Jingrui. Learning English by watching TV shows and listening to English songs is always fun. Learning English can be done in a fun way. Just think about the learning experience of a child when s/he is picking up her or his mother tongue. They don't have to sit in a classroom at all.
