China's Dragon

This week’ theme is about tracing our roots, so today I want to talk something about the symbol animal of China- dragon.

What is dragon? Actually, this kind of animal does not exist in the nature. A dragon consists of snakes, horses, dogs, chicken and fish. All these parts getting together become one of the most powerful, mysterious, attracting animals in Chinese history. It is a symbol of royalty, the same as the yellow color. In old China, only the king of China could wear clothes embroidered with dragons. Emperors thought dragon would show their power that they could control the whole world. That is to say, if a common person used things with dragons in the past, he would be decapitated at once. Maybe some people think these matters show dragon is a frightening symbol. However, its meaning has been changed over the past decades.

When anyone asks a Chinese “who you are”, the Chinese will answer “I am an offspring of the dragon” with pride. Yes! In today’s China, the dragon is considered as a symbol of luck. As a fact, lots of Chinese choose to use things with dragons to show their passion towards dragons. And many mothers would like to have dragon babies in a dragon year. I think the dragon has become a significant and indivisible part of a Chinese’s life.

As a Chinese, I am proud of being an offspring of the dragon.

  1. I also like dragon very much as you do. Yet most westerners consider dragon as a fierce and dangerous beast. Actually, I found that the image of the dragon's appearance were depicted differently between westerners and us. Western type of dragons has wings and can spray fire while our dragons look like snakes without limbs. We share different opinion with westerners on dragons.

Like Bingyou said, our dragon is totally different from the western drgaon. Our dragons live in river or sea, they can spray water and call the rain.

Dragon has become a symbol of China. It contains many people's emotion and encourages us to be better
