Queen of the Andes

Queen of the Andes is an endangered plant species. Its scientific name is Puya raimondii. The reason I want to write about it is that Puya raimondii is the queen of Andes mountain plants.
Queen of the Andes is an endemic species of Bolivia and Peru, and its distribution is restricted to the high Andes at an elevation of 3200m – 4800m. It is called lonely queen, because it is in big size and often occurs in very isolated places. The plant is monocarpic and seeds only once in about 80 years or more before dying. Although a mature Puya will produce 8–12 million seeds, very few of them will survive because of bad living conditions. This is why a century-old plant may not reproduce at all.
The global warming and climate change may cause the conditions of Queen of the Andes to become even worse. In addition, the major risk is due to human activities, such as to set fires on the mountains to get available land, or to cut down trees to serve as fuel or material. Queen of the Andes might also be eaten or kept underfoot by animals. Those are reasons why it is endangered now.
Human activities have changed the world in recent years. Because of human being’s destroy to the nature, many species are dying out. I think everyone of us should try to do something beneficial to the nature, such as saving plain water and planting more trees. Human beings have the responsibility to make the world a better place for all the species to live in harmony.

  1. Yes,it is time for our human beings to do something to protect wildlife, but not destroy them.

  2. We discussed about many distinct animals this week but we have ignored the endangered plants. We have botanical gardens to protect them but they are far from enough. I think natural reservations should also be established to protect endangered plants.

  3. I think you get a good point. Just like decades ago, people ignore animals, now, we do not pay enough attention on plants.

  4. This is my opinion about protecting animals. I think animals that are dying out because of human activities, such as dolphin and tiger, should be protected. However, some animals that cannot get used to the environment should die out; it is better for the evolution. Thank you!

  5. I searched this plant on the internet. It looks very strange! It's amazing that people should eat this plant. Human beings' activities are destroying the habitats of animals and plants. The environment pollution also causes the endangered situation of many species. Human beings should try to save these species, otherwise our children will not see them in the future.

  6. I agree with BOWEN. Human power is limited. People cannot help all kinds of creature; the society need development. Besides, other animals and plants also need to be saved, and they are more easy to be saved than some low fertility creature such as Queen of the Andes.

  7. Though human beings now are aware of the protection of creatures on earth, I think it is far from enough to save the endangered species and plants as long as the existence of interests in these living creatures. In fact, I think what we can do now is to slow the progress of killing creatures until one day there exist no human beings.

  8. While we speak about global warming and extinction, so little seem to be done about it. Every time a major natural disaster hits, it seems like nature is speaking to us, loud and clear. Yet, many do not hear or heed the advice.
