Personality is not an excuse
This Friday, I went to a school to teach pupils Chinese composition. After the experience, I learnt that personality could not consider as an excuse. This class was my first experience to teach, so I was nervous about it. I thought I was good at logic and clear thinking mind, but not hooking. Therefore I was afraid I could not catch students’ interest and they would feel boring. Also, I scared no communication and had a long distance with my class. In the one-hour class, however, they were attracted by me. When I felt they were a little tired, I thought of our tutors. I tried to do what they did in our class. I used some gestures, expressed difficult words with simple sentences, moved around, listened to their discussions carefully and encouraged them on their work. I did not think I did all of them naturally enough, but they worked well. There was no long awkward slience and they all shared their thoughts with me. I was extremely happy when I saw them interested with what I was saying. In my view, we all have bias about ourselves. Sometimes, we think that we cannot do a job well, but in fact, we are afraid to do it. We are escaping difficulties with excuses of personality. If we can face the difficulties, some of them are not that difficult actually, and we have the ability to solve them. Thus, we need confidence and do not use personality as an excuse.

Most of people are afraid of new things, and persuade themselves that these things just do not suit their nature.
ReplyDeleteIf it is a new thing, people cannot decide if it is suitable for them. I think the reason that people refuse to try new things is that they are afraid of "new", not "unsuitable".
I agree with you. It is better to try than just give up. Personality can also be changed after a period of time.
ReplyDeleteWow! You had such a nice experience of teaching kids! Things usually go difficultly at the first. We have to face many uncertainties in our first try, so we need courage to overcome the difficulties. I am glad that you managed them at your first class. I wish you have an even better performance in your next class.
ReplyDeleteBecause you looks so handsome!
ReplyDeleteWhen I taught in a primary school, it was hard for me to control the whole class. I hope next time I could do a better job like what you have wrote. "we have ability to solve them."
Let's improve ourselves and do a better job next time.Come on!
DeleteI cannot agree any more. Actually, in my giving program, I don't need to teach, and when I knew that I felt relieved. I also don't have the confidence to control the class and those naughty guys. I think I lack the trait of leadership, but I usually comfort myself that there are other things I am good at.Your blog make me start to consider making a change.

ReplyDeleteIt is through new experiences that we learn more about ourselves. Good to see that you have uncovered some strengths in your personality through the teaching experience.
ReplyDeleteCongratulation! You have applied our tutor's teaching strategies into your GIVE teaching work. I suppose that next time I will try your method to break the awkward silence haha!!
ReplyDeleteGood point! Our biggest rivals are ourselves, so we need to overcome our own shortages and be confident in challening ourselves.
ReplyDeleteWow, you really have done a good job, Teacher Li. I think you really had a good time with those children even though maybe you aere a little nervous. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteYes, if you are always excusing what you have done, there is no motivition to get forward even a small step.
