Should we design babies?

As the development of science and technology, people now have the power to design babies. They can put genes in an egg to make a baby with expected features. In my view, however, we should not use this power in our daily life. In other words, we should design babies.、

The reason why we should not do it is that we are against the rules of the nature. First of all, any of the species experiences a long time of evaluation. Therefore, there are many reasons why they are like that today. What we know now are only a few of the reasons. So, we do not know how much effect we will make on the creatures if we design them as we like, including human being. Another problem of designing babies is the privacy. Gene now is also considered a private thing, which contains much information of the owner. In addition, I think it is not wrong for us to do experiments to get knowledge, but our aim must be confirmed. We should use science to make the world more balanced, but not to benefit ourselves. There are many examples showing that if we use these powers to benefit ourselves, the nature will punish us, and the environmental problem is one. In my opinion, designing creature project can only be allowed in lab, and we should not try to design babies.

There is an old saying that creating people is gods’ job. Now people consider themselves as the most intelligent creature on earth, and have got a lot of knowledge. Because of the knowledge, people have powers to change the world. The more powerful we are, the more responsibilities we should take. Thus, as we use our knowledge to make our life colorful, we should also follow the rules and be the servants of the nature.

  1. I was little confused as you seemed to be switching from disagreeing to agreeing to the idea having designer babies in the first paragraph and then switching back to disagreeing to it in the first line of your second paragraph. On top of it, I think you meant evolutioon, rather than evaluation right?

  2. When reading your blog, I find there is something ironic; on one hand we want to follow the laws of nature, but on the other hand, the development of human beings are based on obeying the nature. This means it is hard for us to develop in a way of following the nature. But if we do not develop ourselves, it is impossible for us to using the Internet to discuss these things and thinking the issues of science and technology, and maybe we will be living in the way as our ancestors lived several thousand years ago. So, it is really a predicament we are facing.

  3. I think of ao old Chinese saying "harmony between the heaven and human". Human-beings cannot beat the nature because we are a part of it. We can only try to behave better in the limit of the nature.
