I love poetry, especially ancient Chinese poetry. The first poem I learnt might be “goose” written by Luo Binwang. The time when I appreciated poetry was my junior high school, my Chinese teacher’s enthusiasm encouraged me and her lively explanation stimulated my interest in poetry. It is a pity that I lost my interest in poetry because boring exams always asked us to recite some parts of poems we do not like or required us to understand pomes in a certain way. After being in Singapore, there may be fewer chances for us to touch Chinese poetry.
Compared with Chinese poetry, I few got contact with English poetry. The first time I saw the English poems was in text book in junior high school. All my classmates’ reaction was the same as mine that we did not like it, and we all wondered that how can a story written in short lines be called a poem? Before I came to Singapore, one of my friends gave me an English poetry book, “The Wind among the Weeds”. I read the first poem seriously although there were too many difficult words. After I looked up all the new words, I still cannot understand the meaning of that poem. So I looked at the Chinese version, and guessed how it means that. I read that book after supper, but the poem made me fall asleep. When I awoke next morning, I found I actually did not finish the first poem. English did not leave a good impression on me from then on. For writing this blog, however, I picked up the book again and surprisingly found most poems do not have so many difficult words as the first one. I am not sure whether I will enjoy English poetry or not in the future, but now I try to not feel bored about it at least.
We have the similar situation. I do not like reciting the ancient poems at all, and no matter how hard I tried, I would still forget the poems a few days later... However, I believe poems are necessary for us. They might be helpful somehow in our life in the furture. As for English poems, I agree with you. Some of them are just like stories, and I do not think they are so different from the normal paragraph.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am in school, I also feel bored about poems, because I need do many analysis questions about the poems in limited time. When I do not need to do such questions, however, I have different feeling when I read poems. I think reading poems require enough time. If people have to appreciate a poem in 10 minutes, they cannot find the beauty of the poem.
ReplyDeleteAs the popular sentence in our group, "translation is awful", I think it is not the fault of English poems. When I compared English poems to Chinese poems, I found Chinese poems are better than English poems. But then I realized that when I was reading English poems, I tended to translate them into Chinese in my heart to understood them. And when foreigners read Chinese poems, they may have the same feeling. Translation is awful; maybe only when my English level reach to a high standard, can I appreciate English poems .
ReplyDeleteIn fact, it is hard to judge which one is better, chinese poem or english poem. Concise and meaningful, these are the features of chinese poem; expressive and emotional, these are the features of the english one. So in my opinion, it really depends on which style the reader prefer. For us, it would be better to appreciate all the poems we read and feel the emotion of the poet!
ReplyDeleteI do not like analysing poems but I do not hate reciting them. It is hard to describe the feeling when I recite poems. I draw picturs for myself and enjoy the rhyme.
ReplyDeleteI like Chinese peoms better than English ones, and the main reason is that there are many new words for me ,so I cannot fully understand the English ones. I think I should remember more words from now on, but I really do not like to memory.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Wei Dian! I'm glad that you start to appreciate English poems and that's the progress you've made!
ReplyDeleteI only like several Chinese poems, so I feel suffered when I have to read or recite a poem which I dislike. Lots of people say that I need to appreciate poems, but since I do not like it, how can I put my heart into it. Nevertheless, I will try to appreciate it.
